the 1850s, the discovery of gold drew 300,000 men to California. A decade
later, a new "gold" was discovered when America had its first strike of oil in Pennsylvania. Petroleum and
kerosene products quickly replaced all other kinds of oil due to their cheap
price and high stability. Oil became the “black gold." Unlike most
people who entered this new field wishing to make quick money, John D.
Rockefeller (1839-1937) had a long-term view, and within two decades his Standard Oil Company dominated 90% of the oil refining market. Rockefeller’s perseverance and boldness made him the leader of the industry, while his kindness
and generosity left the world an abundant legacy.
